History of Kashmir | "Tarikh-i-Kashmir" of Sayid Ali
Saiyid 'Ali's Tarikh is the only extant Persian chronicle compiled during the Sultanate period (1339-1586) of Kashmir. All other available Persian chronicles were written after the fall of Kashmir to the Mughals in 1586.Â
The Tarikh is an important source for the history of medieval Kashmir. It does not only throw light on the political history of the period it covers, but also helps us to understand the role played by the Sufis in the spread of Islam in Kashmir and the response of the Kashmiris to the call of Islam.Â
The translation is remarkable for its faithfulness to the original. In the introduction the historical data as contained in the Tarikh has been analysed in the light of the existing historical literature, especially the Sanskrit chronicles of Jonaraja and Srivara who preceded Saiyid 'Ali. This gives the reader a fair idea of this historical work.Â
